Synthetic raw materials appeared during the XIXth century which amplified the perfumers’ palette of ingredient.
From Molecules that do not exist naturally to the ones replicating the smell of certain plants, synthetics allow perfumers to create unusual and complex creations meeting customers’ needs regarding the olfactory intensity and remanence.
Modern perfumery was born thanks to those revolutionary compounds that opened new olfactory horizons for perfumers. We can mention houbigant’s fougere royale from 1882 that contained coumarin for the first time. Of course, we cannot forget the iconic Chanel’s 5º created in 1921 by Ernest Beaux that could not exist without the aldehydes.
